You Don’t Join a Church—You’re Joined to a Revelation
Tom Bedford
There are moments when God interrupts the usual rhythm of life and deposits something weighty—something that changes the way you see everything. In fact, I had one of those moments on a Wednesday morning while laying before the Lord in the sanctuary.
In that quiet place, the Spirit of God spoke to me:
“I want you to understand the power of what I released into the earth when I released My house. The Church is a transforming agent, and there is nothing like it in the universe.”
Since then, that one sentence has been burning in me. And because of that, it brings us to a simple but urgent point: the power of the Church is not an optional add-on to the Christian life. Rather, the Church is the center of God’s activity on earth—His chosen dwelling place—holy, eternal, and unlike anything else in creation.
So, if you’ve ever wondered Why does church matter? Why can’t I just follow Jesus on my own?—this is for you.
The Church Is Not a Building—It’s a Revelation
For too long, we’ve reduced “church” to an event, a style, a denomination, or a time slot on a calendar. However, Scripture won’t allow that.
Instead, the Church is the living, abiding body of Christ in the world—living stones joined together to become the dwelling place of God. In other words, the Church isn’t mainly something you attend. It’s something you are joined into by God Himself.
And here’s the key: if you’ve been born again, God has made you a living stone. So then, because He is a wise Builder, He doesn’t leave living stones scattered across the ground. He places them into His house.
That’s why the idea of being “a Christian but not part of the Church” is unthinkable in heaven. There is no “me, myself, and I” church. No private Christian island. Ultimately, you are either in the house…or you’re not.
The Power of the Church Is Being Joined to a People
Now, when someone says:
-
“I love the worship style,”
-
“I like the preaching,”
-
“I like what this church offers,”
…they may be describing preferences. But even so, preferences aren’t the foundation. And presentation isn’t the point.
So what is the point? You don’t join a church because the experience fits your taste. Rather, you are joined because of the revelation.
And the revelation is this: Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God—and He is building a people who carry His presence and confront darkness.
When Peter declared that revelation, Jesus responded:
“On this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18, ESV)

Here’s what that means: hell will not prevail against the Church. At the same time, it often prevails against those who insist on staying disconnected from it. Not because God is harsh, but because God designed growth, covering, and mission to flow through His house.
Love Is the Operating System of the House
If revelation is the foundation, then love is the atmosphere.
Paul teaches that love is higher than gifts, higher than prophecy, and higher than knowledge (1 Corinthians 13, ESV):

Why does that matter? Because love is the environment where real transformation happens.
So, in the house of God:
-
We learn patience with one another.
-
We help each other grow.
-
We cover weaknesses without compromising truth.
-
We speak honestly, but we speak with compassion.
-
We allow people to mature at the speed of grace.
In short, love requires presence. And presence requires a people. That’s why you can’t practice this alone. You can’t be formed into Christlikeness in isolation.
This is part of why we gather—so we can Encounter God, Experience Love, and Emerge Transformed together.
Revelation Relationships: Where Heaven Flows
And not only that—some of the most powerful kingdom moments don’t happen on a stage. More often, they happen in living rooms, at coffee tables, and in the foyer after service—when living stones speak to living stones.
Malachi tells us that when God’s people spoke with one another, their conversation mattered so much to the Lord that it was recorded:
“Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another. The LORD paid attention and heard them….” (Malachi 3:16, ESV)
https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MAL.3.16.ESV
That’s the picture: revelation shared in community becomes a channel for heaven.
As that happens:
-
your spirit sharpens,
-
your understanding deepens,
-
your calling becomes clearer,
-
and heaven feels near again.
Simply put, revelation grows best in community, not isolation.
The Church Makes Heaven’s Wisdom Known
Even more, Paul says something astonishing about the Church:
“…through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 3:10, ESV)
https://www.bible.com/bible/59/EPH.3.10.ESV
In other words, the unseen realm recognizes when a church is present. Darkness can sense unity. Hell resists a people filled with revelation. And yet, it cannot invade a house that is holy, joined, and governed by God’s wisdom.
That’s why the enemy works overtime to keep people out of the house, offended by the house, discouraged about the house, or distracted from the house. Hell cannot defeat the Church—but it often targets disconnected believers.
You Were Saved for More Than a Nice Life
So, let’s say it plainly: you weren’t saved just to be comfortable.
You were saved to:
-
push back darkness
-
rescue the lost
-
confront lies with truth
-
carry God’s presence into your world
-
steward grace that sets captives free
And here’s the encouragement: when you pray, disciple, forgive, serve, and stand in faith—you are advancing the kingdom of God. And while God can use you anywhere, He designed your life to flourish in His house, not outside of it.
Welcome Home
Finally, remember this: the Church is God’s eternal plan on earth. Not celebrity Christianity. Not religious consumerism. Not disconnected spirituality.
Instead, God is building a house:
-
filled with revelation
-
governed by love
-
joined by the Spirit
-
confronting darkness with heaven’s wisdom
This is who we are. This is what we are called to be. And this is why we gather—so that from His presence to every place, the life of Jesus spreads through a people.
So whether you’ve been part of church for years, or you’re searching for a church family right now, hear this invitation: you don’t join a presentation—you’re joined to a revelation. You’re joined to a people. You’re joined to a purpose.
Welcome home.
